Aztec Mocha

For days when you want your hot chocolate with a little fire and flair. This is comfort with a kick,  rich dark cocoa, a shot of espresso, and warming spices that’ll have you feeling like an Aztec warrior.

What do I need?

  • 1 shot of espresso (or ¼ cup strong coffee)
  • 1 cup full cream milk
  • 2 tbsp dark cocoa powder (unsweetened)
  • 2 tsp dark brown sugar
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 small pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 small pinch ground cloves
  • ¼ tsp vanilla extract
  • 30 g dark chocolate
  • (85% if you are feeling brave)

How do I make it?

  1. Heat the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until steamy, but do not boil it.
  2. Whisk in the cocoa powder, brown sugar, cinnamon, cayenne, nutmeg, and cloves.
  3. Stir until smooth and the cocoa is fully dissolved.
  4. Add the dark chocolate and stir gently until melted and velvety.
  5. Remove from heat and stir through the vanilla extract.
  6. Pour in your espresso and mix well.
  7. Taste and adjust, adding a touch more sugar or cayenne if desired.
  8. Pour into your favourite mug, sprinkle with a little cinnamon or chilli powder, and sip slowly.
