For days when you want your hot chocolate with a little fire and flair. This is comfort with a kick, rich dark cocoa, a shot of espresso, and warming spices that’ll have you feeling like an Aztec warrior.
What do I need?
- 1 shot of espresso (or ¼ cup strong coffee)
- 1 cup full cream milk
- 2 tbsp dark cocoa powder (unsweetened)
- 2 tsp dark brown sugar
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 small pinch ground nutmeg
- 1 small pinch ground cloves
- ¼ tsp vanilla extract
- 30 g dark chocolate
- (85% if you are feeling brave)
How do I make it?
- Heat the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until steamy, but do not boil it.
- Whisk in the cocoa powder, brown sugar, cinnamon, cayenne, nutmeg, and cloves.
- Stir until smooth and the cocoa is fully dissolved.
- Add the dark chocolate and stir gently until melted and velvety.
- Remove from heat and stir through the vanilla extract.
- Pour in your espresso and mix well.
- Taste and adjust, adding a touch more sugar or cayenne if desired.
- Pour into your favourite mug, sprinkle with a little cinnamon or chilli powder, and sip slowly.
